Over time, I’ve developed a way of learning and practising watercolor that I call ‘Purposeful Painting’.

Practicing matters, but how you practice matters more

I think that’s the thing. The secret isn’t simply to practice more. It’s to practice the right way – with intention, and with purpose.

My Purposeful Painting method is built around a few simple ideas: 

1. Breaking down skills into smaller, focused exercises, so you are not trying to take on everything at once.
2. It means getting feedback – through practice lessons designed for self-correction, as well as ongoing guidance. 
3. It encourages you to work just outside your comfort zone, instead of repeating what already feels easy.
4.  And it means practicing with a clear specific goal in mind.

Because that’s the point, really. 

Like this, every brushstroke has a reason. And every practice has a purpose.
